Dear Dean Segel:

There is no doubt that Ehud Shapiro is worthy of Assistant
Professor rank. His PhD thesis and the work he did before it have
already established him as one of the leaders in logic programming,
and he has outlined for himself a very coherent research program.
The Japanese Fifth Generation Project has adopted his ideas on
concurrent Prolog.

I have been trying to attract his interest in coming to
Stanford and to get him an offer, but there seems to be some
prejudice against logic programming here that will take time to
overcome. Also at the time, there was a local candidate who was
clearly worthy of a position and therefore some reluctance to
consider others. Anyway I predict you'll have competition for
him from Stanford sooner or later.

I would rate him as the top young mind in logic programming,
above David Warren, the two Pereiras and Sten-Ake Tarnlund. Soon he
will be competitive with Robert Kowalski, Alain Colmerauer and Keith Clark.
